State Rep. Jaime Greene today led the House in approving her plan to prevent Macomb County from losing a significant chunk of road funding due to changes in population.

The measure ensures Macomb County avoids a loss of more than $1 million in transportation funds dedicated to reducing traffic congestion — funds the county has relied on for years to improve local infrastructure and maintain road safety.

“This is a huge victory for Macomb County,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “We needed swift action, and I’m proud to say we delivered. This funding is essential to keeping our roads safe and easing traffic congestion, and with this bill passed, we’ve ensured our communities won’t be unfairly penalized for changes outside of their control.”

The concern revolves around a portion of the state’s transportation funds distributed each year to Michigan’s most populous counties. Due to population changes, Kent County’s growth placed it in the same subcategory as Macomb County in the funding formula. Without legislative intervention, the two counties would have been forced to split the available funds, reducing the amount each county receives.

Greene’s legislation, House Bill 5922, adjusts the population thresholds in the funding formula, allowing both Macomb and Kent counties to continue receiving their historical share of funds.

“I’ve worked hard to ensure Macomb County retains the road funding it depends on, and I’m relieved we are able to move this solution forward,” Greene said.

Now that the measure has passed the House, Greene is calling on the Senate to act quickly.

“We cannot afford to delay this any further,” Greene said. “It’s critical that the Senate moves swiftly so that both Macomb and Kent County avoid these devastating cuts. The people of Macomb County are counting on us to get this across the finish line.”
