Rep. O’Malley: Signed plan underscores Legislature’s commitment to improving SOS services
RELEASE|August 2, 2021

Vital walk-in service restored as part of new law

State Rep. Jack O’Malley, of Lake Ann, recently supported the signing of a more flexible, practical service structure for those who have recently had difficulty with the Secretary of State.

The new law requires daily walk-in options at branch offices – a needed add-on from the appointment-only approach employed by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations expiring between March 31 and Aug. 1 will be considered valid for 120 days past their expiration dates, and late fees will not be charged.

“I have heard from many about the convenience offered from walking into a branch and getting something taken care of,” O’Malley said. “It makes sense. With a massive backlog of people needing assistance due to branch shutdowns, we needed to provide options. The Legislature made this change a top priority to meet the needs of people and we have delivered with bills that received the governor’s signature.”

While same-day service is not guaranteed, a branch office employee can still schedule an individual for an appointment at another day and time. O’Malley said the ability to have a face-to-face interaction will provide people with more peace of mind and finite resolutions.

The second-term legislator helped guide the bills to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk as it moved through the House Oversight Committee, which he currently serves on.
