State Rep. John Roth, of Traverse City, today issued the following statement on the Michigan House’s plan to approve comprehensive COVID-19 response measures tomorrow during session. Included in the measures are methods to get Michigan kids back in the classroom and participating in winter sports activities. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has banned certain high school winter sports through Feb. 21:

“I recently had a meeting with the executive office and an official from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services on the status of high school winter sports in Michigan and I believe that conversation was constructive. We’ve heard from many student-athletes across the state who are struggling with not being able to compete. Student mental health is a critical part of this equation. For athletes, sports are their mental health support system. They’re a way to build relationships, confidence and a fit lifestyle. Sports are also a way for some athletes to earn college scholarships, which are huge opportunities for families.

“I wanted to be proactive for our kids and push for results. And I’m still pushing for results. That is why I am voting to approve these measures and get them to the governor. This action is crucial for the well-being of our kids.”
