State Rep. Donni Steele, R-Orion Township, today announced Michigan taxpayers and small-business owners will now receive permanent income tax relief after the governor’s administration failed in their attempt to block the long-term relief.

“This is a huge win for all Michigan taxpayers, including our struggling small-business owners,” said Steele, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “This permanent tax savings was promised to the people of Michigan, and we made sure our state government delivered on that important promise. People need genuine tax relief now more than ever.”

Current state law requires an automatic income tax rollback when state revenues significantly outpace inflation. The governor’s administration attempted to circumvent the law with a misguided plan of their own, but those efforts failed on Tuesday when Republicans did not give the plan immediate effect.

Other provisions in the plan to increase tax savings for retired seniors and boost the earned income tax credit for working families — policies that Rep. Steele championed this year — will take effect next year should the governor sign the bill.
